I asked to see the numbers at the end of the night, and instead of showing me how many people came in, the extremely rude and belligerently drunk owner of the bar kicked me out. "the booker booked you, I hired the booker. You can talk to the booker, and he can talk to me, but I don't talk to you, get outta my bar!" I explained that the booker wasn't here, and I needed to know what to expect (especially since I'd been ripped off before by the same booker). Anyway, I did get my guarantee, but I am still not sure what we really made that night, and the experience was shitty, but enlightening. I'd give it less than a star if I could.
Just a word of warning: we packed it out that night, so I'd be extra cautious if you don't have much draw -- for as much as I felt robbed and demeaned at the time, I can only guess what kind of stuff they pull on people who don't have a contract or a crowd.
Also had to turn down gigs before this because during the week they have a production fee, and the bands split the door with the booker, so on slow nights the booker (usually a different booker) splits the door with the band. I think I figured that if 40 people showed up the booker walks outta there with $17, and each band ('cause they mostly book multi-band bills) splits $80. It's just not worth it for anybody.
