The warm and engrossing atmosphere at Monty's Krown is second to none in the Rochester area. The staff is the coolest around and it's one of the few venues we've played that respects and takes care of performers. The bar is frequented by a core group of local music and art fans and the sense of community is almost feels like playing a party at a friend's house. As a new band a few years back they were happy to book us and have been our favorite venue in town since then.
The staff supports a very Laissez-faire relationship with bands - the stage is very small and the you might fight with the powered mixer (no stage monitors - there is a passive monitor output though). Expect to take care of your own sound. A low stage volume is best for the room as we've seen plenty a band send people fleeing with full stacks and drowned-out vocals - although a metal or punk show there kind of asks for and enjoys the bloody eardrums associated with these genres. Acoustic and lower-volume genre acts are equally appreciated.
Monty's generally supplies a door person to collect the cover (21 and over). Promotion and cover charge (usually $3) are the performers' responsibilities. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more inviting place to see a show or perform one in town. It's not a large or great sounding room and doesn't claim to be. Instead you'll be attracted to the unpretentious and beer-soaked air of the place: a community tavern where music is appreciated and shows can be enlightening and joyous experiences.
