It took months of emails to get a booking. The correspondence leading up to their decision was very pleasant. They said they require that all bandleaders fill out a W-2, and they asked me to email them my SSN. I refused, so the booking never happened.

A few months later, I played at Tomi with someone else's band. The staff were great. The place is really, really small, and incredibly dark. Not a bad place for standards or tunes you have memorized, but very difficult for a gig with intricate charts.

Have only played in non-leader capacity. Positives: There is a PA and upright (never in tune and disklavier, which is not a piano for any kind of performance, but still). Some walk-in crowd. There is some guaranteed pay. The atmosphere is, IMO, nice and speakeasy like. Audiences have been appreciate at times. Will give residencies, which is cool. Let you pass around a tip jar too.
Negatives: The pay structure, even if you bring in a lot of people, is unrewarding. I've played there for a packed house and the leader took away less than nec. to cover the band expenses. Unbelieveable. The staff there can be nice but i had a couple of experiences where the staff was rude or indifferent. Don't know how easy booking is there.
